Happy Birthday!

Special events seem to run in groups- First it's Christmas, then a week later is New Years and Norm's b-day, nine days later is  Dan's b-day, Cindy's is Jan 25th and Mom & Kate's share Feb 24th as their day of birth.

We decided to do all four birthdays at once
and make a special weekend of it.

My favorite part of this picture is how awkward Randy looks trying to stay out of the way.

Cindy made a Funfetti Cake with Rainbow Chip frosting for Kate, a Lemon Meringue Pie for Dad which followed an exquisite tri-tip feed with all the trimmings.

We had such a special time.  Mike and Kate gave Cindy a birdhouse (that Mike made!) and Mom and Dad found a 1950's "Better Homes and Garden Cookbook."  An iconic American essential!

The night was made even more fun by the helicopters flying overhead at 2am while police sirens went screaming by.  Needless to say, we were very sleepy at church the next day, but we still had more celebrating to do!

So in love!

A group met up at the Old Ship in Santa Ana- a British Pub that is one of Cindy's favorite places in the world.  Lot's of laughter, old and new friends, and some yummy rack of lamb made a fabulous night.

Mom and Dad loved the place (said they'd be back for sure)

Gotta love them :-)

Carpool Buddies!  We spent many a college day at this pub...

Annie and Eric- so special

Yorkshire pudding and rack of lamb- tasted better than it looked

All that fun and it wasn't even Cindy's real birthday yet!

What's Going On?

We have had almost our entire annual rainfall in
just three days!
There was even a tornado off of the pier at
 Huntington Beach yesterday afternoon.

While cuddling in this cold weather is fun,
the garage flooding and the roof leaking in our bedroom last night was not.

Thankfully, our neighbor climbed up on the tallest ladder I've ever seen and opened our rain gutter wider, then put a tarp in the corner that was leaking.  This was all while we cleaned up the mud in the garage, threw away two boxes and rescued our poor Christmas tree (who made it through ok, even if the box did not).

Just a few streets down from us (on Termino) cars were flooded up to the dash!
Thank you Lord for your protection :-)

A Year in Review

What a crazy year!  I've never experienced so many ups and downs.  We began last January by flying home from New Zealand and getting stuck in Fiji for the day. Not a bad place to be stuck.
The rest of January flew by as we decided on a wedding location, picked a date, celebrated Cindy's 28th Birthday and prayed about where to go to church.
February was much the same and we just enjoyed being engaged.
In March our sisters, Katie and Kate, threw us a super fun engagement party.

April came and we decided to make a Pavlova for Easter.
We Skyped Mum to make sure we had a truly authentic kiwi pav when we found out Dad was sick and would be taking some tests at the hospital.

We learned a lot over the next few months about the grace and love of God.  The wedding became insignificant as Dad's health seemed to grow worse daily.  First we got the news of cancer, then found out it was lung cancer, and finally, the first week of June, found out that a brain tumor had been discovered.

Things seemed to come apart; Cindy's summer job fell through due to the bad economy, Tony lost a friend in Northern California in a bad accident, it seemed highly likely that Jude and Norm wouldn't make it for the wedding, and we felt that being apart from them during all this was too much.   So we packed our bags and headed off to Auckland returning only two weeks before the wedding!

The Body of Christ is an amazing organism and we were blessed to see it work in a way we'd never seen before.  People began to pray for Dad's health and salvation all over the world.  We were constantly getting e-mails, calls and visits from people wanting to pray with us and for us and ask how they could help with the wedding.  Talk about being loved by others!

There were some fun times too. Wedding showers and family holiday's were even more special.

Tony cooked a roast lamb for Mother's Day that still has the Stuck family drooling for more!
He found ton's of enjoyment playing soccer, and still faithfully plays each Saturday.

We found out Mike and Kate would be having another baby in November, and the Wayne and Leonie would be building a house in Hastings.  Of course, we were still very excited about our upcoming marriage and Tony worked to ready the house for his new bride by remodeling the bathroom and painting the bedroom, hall and front room.

We spent a very special few weeks with Dad and the rest of the Kuypers family at the end of June.  We laughed and cried and prayed with our family and saw a change in Dad's spirit as he came to know, understand and believe in what Jesus Christ did- "that if we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, then you will be saved."

Then came THE WEDDING!

What a special time it was to have Kuypers and Stucks (and Hedges, Wales, Timms, Hitchcocks, etc) all together.  We pretty much spent the whole week running around like crazy, shopping, eating, going to the airport, and had a fabulous time together.
We had quite an unconventional Rehearsal Dinner with 30+ people eating pizza on blankets and camping chairs in the Stuck's backyard.

Actually, the rehearsal dinner was almost more fun than the wedding as we were so relaxed visiting with our favorite people from (literally) all over the world.

The wedding itself was an incredible blessing.  I've never been to such a beautiful wedding!  The weather, the setting, the food, the people, the pinata, the music.... it was such a great party.  Even Daddy Dan was spotted bustin' a move on the dance floor at one point.

Then we were off to Mexico on our Honeymoon cruise for some much-needed relaxation.  God was so good to give us a great week together.

Two weeks after the wedding Norm passed away and we were back to New Zealand for a very special funeral for a much-loved Father.  We ended our time (as we usually do) with a great big fried food fest- Fish and chips (regular potato and sweet potato chips).  There really is nothing like this in the US.

September brought the start to Cindy's 8th year teaching at Carden, and a bit of respite as we fell into a routine.  We stayed home and enjoyed each other through October.

November had a bit more zing to it as Tony celebrated his (gulp) 39th Birthday,

Mike and Kate welcomed Baby Dylan into the family,

and we celebrated Thanksgiving in Fallbrook.

December was a very special time of enjoying each other's company, eating WAY too much, and spending day after day with family- whether in person or via Skype.

2009 may not have been the year we thought it would be, but it turned out pretty special. We can't wait to see how God will work in our lives in 2010!

Scattering Norm's Ashes

Judith and Norm had been thinking of
purchasing this sundial for their garden
before Norm was diagnosed.
It is a lovely and fitting tribute.

Things I Like About Living in Long Beach

-Walking to the Post Office and passing the two squirrels who live on our street
-Living 1.1 miles from the beach
-The haphazard zoning
A house next to a bookstore next to two houses next to a Chiropractor next to another few houses next to a corner market across the street from a Jewish temple,  all three blocks from our place
-Excellent Ethnic Cuisine on 2nd Street
-People walking everywhere
-Mexican Markets with creative spelling (Top Valu, no "e" on the end) and amazingly fresh and diverse selections of produce for pennies
Plus you feel like you're on a trip because your husband is the only blond person in the store
-Beach cottages with miniature everything... mini porches, dormers, gardens, sun rooms, dogs
-Beach cruisers with baskets to do the marketing
-CHEAP RENT!
-7 Fried Chicken Fast Food Restaurants within 4 blocks (not that we've tried any of them).

Merry Christmas!

Tony was off Christmas Eve, so we had a quiet day and went to Calvary's Candlelight Service.  We had our traditional Stuck Family Christmas Eve dinner at Don Jose's (fantastic food, but you leave with the delightful oder of smoke and chili's stuck to your clothes).  We came back to Long Beach to turn on our Christmas tree and Skype the Kuypers Family on their Christmas Day.

Christmas morning was the most relaxing holiday we've had in a long time.  In the absence of a working fireplace (we have this pretend one built into the cabinets in our dining room...) we took advantage of the KTLA Yule Log on TV.  Coupled with the floor heater and a pine scented candle, we felt quite cosy.   We had a yummy breakfast that I had puzzled for days over- I was trying to create new family traditions and I thought "Christmas Breakfast, that can be a tradition."  After some serious contemplation, I decided that my Christmas Breakfast tradition would be to make something easy.  Pillsbury rolls and pre-cooked sausage- 18 minutes start to finish.  My kind of tradition.

After opening a surprising amount of presents for two people (thank you New Zealand Family), we headed off to the Stuck's for Christmas Craziness!  I kid you not.  There were babies, there were Santa hats that played music,  there were new video games that were hilarious to play (next time you're there, ask Mom Stuck to play Super Mario Brothers), there was wrapping paper flying everywhere, lot's and lot's of laughter, and, as with any proper Stuck gathering, obscene amounts of food.

I think this picture pretty much sums up the day.
We wore ourselves out with Christmas baby love.
